Excelsior wattles, which are similar to erosion control logs in design and purpose, differ in the inner material density. Made with a consistent width of fibers comprised of Aspen wood shavings, the biodegradable fibers are evenly distributed throughout the cylinder. This creates more flexible and less dense natural erosion control. Our wattles are designed to be used as perimeter controls on slopes, check dams, at curb cuts and around drain inlets. Excelsior wattles offer more flexibility and filtration options than their log counterparts. They are also used as erosion preventatives due to their ability to direct groundwater flow while effectively filtering out sediment. Excelsior Wattle Technical Specifications

Needing to create natural borders along shorelines, waterways, and other slopes? Excelsior logs are a great alternative erosion control for areas likely to erode. Erosion control logs give coastlines and riverbanks time to stabilize and restore by building up areas that have already eroded and lost soil. Water filters through (not underneath) the porous, Excelsior fiber log.  The water’s velocity is reduced and sediment is retained, slowing the erosion process. Our eco-friendly erosion control logs are also great for starting seedlings in areas that are bare soil or have washed away. You simply make holes in the Excelsior logs and plant the seedlings. Because our logs are biodegradable, they simply degrade over time to enrich the soil as it bonds to the fiber. Parks and Recreation often use our alternative erosion control logs in public parks or recreation areas to restore creeks, streams, and other waterways. While Excelsior logs are similar to Excelsior wattles, their purpose is different. Our biodegradable erosion logs are more densely packed and primarily used for soil stabilization, along shorelines, riverbanks, and other slopes. Our Excelsior wattle focuses more on sediment control and filtration goals. The natural fiber is packed loosely with more flexibility, allowing water to filter through it. Common applications include:

• Erosion and Sediment Control - Placed strategically, Excelsior erosion logs will slow runoff on low-flow streambanks and slopes, reducing erosion and protecting the slope's integrity.
• Drain Protection - As a stormwater BMP, Excelsior erosion wattle catches and filters water before it enters sewer drains, catch basins, and curb inlets.
• Construction Site Perimeter Control - Construction projects have ground that has been disturbed, our alternative Excelsior wattles are often used to prevent sediment from leaving a jobsite area in stormwater flows. Strategically placed at stormwater exit points, they are very effective in filtering out sediment and debris, allowing only clean water to exit the property.
• Check Dam - A common concern with check dams, is that they are often left unattended and forgotten in the field, long after the project's completion. With the erosion wattle that is no longer a worry. Wood fiber wattle makes an effective and environmentally-friendly check dam. Fully biodegradable, they can be left in the field. They will compost as they gradually decompose, further enriching the soil on location while providing stormwater control measures that support federal regulations. Over time, vegetation will grow on the wattle, further strengthening its properties in stormwater diversion and filtration.
