Environmental Dredging Geotubes

Environmental dredging is used in remediation of water in contaminated areas. Uncontrolled industry and domestic development result in the creation of contaminants in the sediment of waterways, lakes, rivers and harbors. These polluted sediments generate environmental risk because many of the pollutants stay in the sediments for a long time. Plants absorb contaminants and aquatic life ingest pollutants creating impurities in the animal and human food chain.

Environmental dredging disintegrates the sediment layer, raising the dredged material to the surface and making horizontal transportation of the contaminated sediment slurry possible. Performing the three stages of dredging in a controlled way with minimal disturbance and contamination of the surrounding area is the goal of environmental dredging.

1. Filling: The dredged in-coming contaminated sediment slurry is dosed with a chemical dewatering accelerant. The sediment slurry then enters the dewatering containers. The solids bind together, allowing the water to separate out.

2. Dewatering: The slurry water passes through the permeable skin of the geotube. Clear effluent water drains from the tube, leaving 99% of solids in the tube. Containers go through several filling and drawdown cycles before the dewatering is complete.

3. Consolidation: The effluent water drains to a location in the facility and is returned to its natural environment or is treated further to meet water quality standards. The contained solids are then transported to an offsite disposal facility or put to beneficial re-use.
