Geotextile Silt Fence

A geotextile silt fence filters sediment on job sites where water flow and erosion need to be maintained. Made from 100 percent synthetic fibers, silt control fence comes in various strengths.

Perimeter runoff control with an erosion control silt fence is best used in areas with a small amount of drainage and a slope length of less than 100 feet. Silt control fence comes in rolls with or without attached stakes. Wooden stakes and metal posts used for installation can be purchased in conjunction with the silt fence.

The life expectancy of a geotextile silt fence is six months, depending on the conditions of the site. To ensure that perimeter runoff is controlled, regularly check the silt control fence for tears and gaps after rainstorms. Remove retained sediment when it reaches one-third to one-half the height of the fence.

Staked Turbidity Barrier

Staked turbidity barriers control runoff, sheet flow, and sediment from sites. Made from yellow PVC fabric, this impermeable barrier offers more durability when compared to the standard black geotextile silt fence.


Sediment and contaminated storm water in small ditches can be controlled through a turbidity barrier on a site with increased water flow. Because of the impermeability of the barrier, water flow is directed rather than filtered.


Sediment pollution and turbidity can be controlled by a staked turbidity barrier in shallow water less than 30 inches.


A staked turbidity barrier can control sediment in a variety of places:

Regularly checking a staked turbidity barrier is important. To make sure your barrier is effectively controlling sediment and runoff, regularly check for gaps in the PVC material. Adjust any stakes that have fallen and remove build ups of sediment.

Staked turbidity barriers can be easily installed to ensure best management practices. Create a runoff seal by digging an 8 inch trench along the desired path for flow control. After installing wooden stakes or rebar, unroll and attach the PVC material using staples or nylon ties. Backfill the trench to make sure that the barrier is effectively controlling sediment.


Impermeable turbidity barriers come in 100 foot rolls with accessories like stakes, rebar, staples, and nylon ties, which are sold separately.

Compost Filter Sock

Compost filter socks filter water flow while limiting future erosion. Made with UV-stabilized polypropylene netting and filled with a blend of two and three inch wood shavings and compost, erosion control devices work along the perimeter of a site.


Used in perimeter control for runoff and storm water, compost filter socks can also limit sediment pollution around swales and reduce solid pollutants and turbidity in water flow.

Perimeter runoff control methods are not standardized. However, compost filter socks can be customized to fit each site's specifications. Place a filter sock on contours and perpendicular to the water flow. Make sure the ground is free of debris that could allow pollutants to get under the sediment control device.

Compost filter socks are not meant to be placed in waterways or streams. To keep the sock in place, drive a stake through the center of the sock and into the soil. To maintain a compost filter sock, inspect it regularly, checking for damage to the netting or restrictions in water flow.


Municipalities can use compost filter socks as part of its Stormwater Management system in conjunction with other sediment control devices.
