Staked Sediment Barrier

The staked turbidity barrier is a reliable and tough stormwater BMP is used on construction sites that suffer from significant stormwater runoff or sheet flow. Secured in place with either wooden stakes or rebar, the staked sediment control barrier controls erosion by directing the water along a prescribed and protected path. Staked turbidity barrier meets FDOT and DOT requirements for use in sediment and erosion compliance.

Use staked sediment barrier to prevent stormwater runoff and sheet-flow from causing erosion on your jobsite. As the strongest sediment control barrier, it will stop erosion and direct the water flow to a settling basin, catchment pond, ditch, or other desired location. Be certain to take into consideration the type of soil at the site, the length of the slope, expected rainfall, and the site layout. Another use is as a staked turbidity barrier in shallow marshes or lakesides. Staked turbidity barrier works best on gentle to moderately sloped sites with porous soil or in water with depths of less than 18".

To install staked sediment barrier for erosion control, follow the general guidelines below along with your specific installation plan for the project. Proper installation is important for this stormwater control solution's effectiveness.

1. 1) Dig an 8 inch deep trench aong the desired flow control path, placing fill on the upslope side of trench.


2. 2) If using the unstaked sediment barrier, Install 1"x 1" wooden stakes (re-bar or similar) on 6' centers maximum on the downslope side of trench, with the stakes protruding 36" above the gradient.


3. 3) Unroll the silt barrier.


4. 4) Fasten the barrier to the stakes.


5. 5) Once the fencing has been installed, backfill the trench. The goal of this is to trap the bottom 8" of silt barrier. This creates a runoff seal to create the containment area without a breach. Sandbags can also be used for sealing the fence.

Note: If you choose the unstaked fencing option, stakes and ties/staples are extra.

Or as another option that will save your crew time on the job, you can buy pre-staked sediment barrier. WIth the pre-staked option, the stakes are alread attached, making it fast and easy to install. For long term projects, or for ones that you'd like to reuse the fencing, consider purchasing the prestaked ooption, with metal lattice reinforcement.

It can be used for stormwater erosion and sediment containment. Given its high level of strength, it is also favored for use in managing and directing runoff or sheet flow to settling ponds and retention basins. Lastly, the sediment barrier is also a preferred solution in shallow construction areas that of less than 18" needing turbidity control.
